Blink-182 was a band formed in 1992 by Tom Delonge, Mark Hoppus, and Scott Raynor later to be replaced by Travis Barker.

In May 1993, Blink recorded their first demo tape, entitled Flyswatter, in drummer Scott Raynor’s bedroom. A 4-track was used to record the material, resulting in poor sound quality. According to Hoppus, only around fifty copies of the demo were produced to give to their family and friends. Blink-182 band merchandise is such a hot seller and one can’t help but wonder if a few pieces might have been designed before the band made it big. Before the end of the year, the band released another demo, Buddha. Around 1,000 copies were produced by Filter Records, an independent record company headed by Hoppus’s boss.

In early 1994, Blink signed with Cargo Records. The band recorded their debut full-length album, Cheshire Cat in three days. The album contained a number of updated versions of songs such as “Carousel”, “Strings”, “Sometimes” and “TV” that had appeared on the Buddha demo as well as some originals.

Shortly after the release of Cheshire Cat, Blink was threatened with legal action by a pop band in Ireland of the same name. In order to avoid a dispute, Blink appended “182” to the end of their name. The band has cited a variety of reasons for ultimately choosing 182, with some of the more common explanations being the number of times Tony Montana utters the word “fuck” in Scarface, references to the 1985 Timothy Hutton film, Turk 182!, the band’s ideal weight, the number of half the days in a year and the number of miles Hoppus had to drive to visit his girlfriend. However, DeLonge has stated that it is just a number that they “pulled out of their ass”.

After moving to Encinitas, California, the band recorded the album Dude Ranch in 1996 with producer Mark Trombino. Blink-182 recorded the album under Cargo Records, but signed with MCA which later became Geffen Records in 1996, in order to handle increased distribution. The album was released in 1997 and was relatively commercially successful, selling 4 million copies worldwide.

After selling over four million copies of Enema of the State, the trio played on with the limited-edition release The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back) in fall 2000. The album featured the band’s radio hits in a live setting, intertwined with their quirky sense of humor as well as the new song “Man Overboard.” Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, issued in spring 2001, saw the band return to their SoCal punk rock roots. Maturity, of a sort, came with 2003’s self-titled album, released on Geffen. Not only did the album sport a song (”All of This”) that featured Robert Smith of the Cure, but “I Miss You” also topped the modern rock charts in 2005.

In February 2005, however, popular as ever and seemingly indestructible, blink-182 unexpectedly announced they would be going on an “indefinite hiatus,” supposedly to spend more time with their growing families. Asking fans for help in selecting tracks, the group issued Greatest Hits that November. Band members also continued on with other projects: Barker — who had previously released an album with DeLonge as Boxcar Racer — continued playing with the Transplants and running his clothing company, Famous Stars and Straps. His family was also spotlighted in the MTV reality show Meet the Barkers. Hoppus carried on with his Atticus fashion venture, began producing — starting with Motion City Soundtrack’s Commit This to Memory — and hosting his own podcasts. He further began work with Barker in a new band, Plus 44. DeLonge also continued work with his lifestyle clothing company, Macbeth, and formally announced his new project, Angels and Airwaves, that fall.

Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 and +44 announced that he will be producing the next New Found Glory record.

Another Girl, Another Planet

Hoppus posted the following on his website…

“wow it’s been a while. just got home from a week of vacation in st thomas. i had to go out and get a good tan (meaning “heat rash”) in between recording the koopa record last month and the new found glory record next month. i know that many of you are anxious to hear about what’s up in +44 world, and we are still in pre-production. although i have half a mind to post one of the demos up here one of these days. i wonder if the label would sue me if i did? can they do that? probably, right? anyway, instead of a demo, i will post a photo i took of a fish while i was on vacation. that’s right. i took this picture. i am the new jacques cousteau. i need one of those orange beanies…”

DeLonge Says No To Blink 182 Reunion

Former Blink 182 frontman Tom DeLonge has ruled out ever reforming the punk band because he couldn’t bear to perform the songs he wrote in his youth.

The singer – who now fronts Angels & Airways – enjoyed huge success with his rock trio, but he has disappointed fans by insisting it’s impossible to reunite a band who sang about “first dates.”

DeLonge feels he’d be cheating himself and the band’s followers if he were to impersonate the man he used to be.

He says, “I really cannot see any possible way that Blink would get back together, nor do I have any desire for it. It was a really amazing, magical time for me when I was young but, now I’m older, I’m doing things that reflect my life now.

“It would be a lie to myself to go and sing about first dates and girls at the rock show. That’s not really what I’m about right now.”
